Amina Everett Will Bring Democratic Values to NM Senate District 40
Amina Everett is the oldest of four children. She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where she and her younger brother shared the challenge of being the first students of color to integrate an all-white elementary school. Having been name-called as a child, the cloud of racial discrimination did not lift for her until she arrived in Lagos, Nigeria, as a young adult.
The experience of equality and respect galvanized Amina into her career in international finance and business, and then on to public service in the Illinois state government. She obtained her BA in psychology and her MBA in Business at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Amina is an alumna of the Rio Rancho Citizens Police Academy, a Board Member of Rebuilding Together Sandoval County, a member of the Rio Rancho Players Community Theater, and Treasurer of the Rio Rancho Northwest Mesa NAACP.
- WWhat motivates you to run for the NM State Senate?
So many motivators! One of them is education. We know there are deficits in education in New Mexico and I want to address that. We know what we need, and it starts at the school board level. A school board position needs to be a professional position and not just a resume builder for politicians. We need to investigate how we can support professional school boards, and then we need to develop the legislation to do that.
- What other issues are of interest to you?
Public safety interests me deeply. My experience attending the Rio Rancho Citizen Policy Academy gave me greater insight into and appreciation for law enforcement operations and how services are delivered. I recall the recent story of the person who dropped a purse in an Albuquerque restaurant and a gun discharged. The State Legislature should work with Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on public safety to obtain results that are vital to every one of us.
Accessible and affordable health care is also an area that interests me both professionally and personally. The Covid years highlighted our need for public safety measures and reliable health care for all. I lost close family members to Covid. The massive loss of life during those years was tragic and avoidable. This experience should never be repeated.
Also related to healthcare, protecting reproductive freedom in New Mexico is one of my priority goals.
- Any insight on national politics you would like to share?
The Democratic Party is running on principle: the rule of law, democracy, and the U.S. Constitution. We must adhere to these principles to move forward in this country. The MAGA Republicans are bringing us misinformation and are attempting to destroy democracy.
