From the County Chair – August 2024

by | Jul 31, 2024 | Message from the Chair, Newsletters

OMG!  How about Kamala Harris!  I don’t have to tell about the fervor around our presidential candidate because I’m sure you’ve seen it by now, but WOW!

President Biden has been working hard for the American people and will continue to move our country forward until he hands over the reigns to the future President Harris.  His selfless dedication to our country and its people is inspirational.

As you may guess, I have been getting a lot of phone calls from people wanting to help elect Democrats in our county.  This is great news because at press, we have 97 days until election day.  Early voting begins the third Saturday before the election; that would be about October 19th.  That means we only have 80 days to accomplish many important tasks!

If you really want to help move the pendulum left this election, CANVASS.  The most effective way to reach voters is canvassing.  Teaming up for a three-hour shift once a week can put you face-to-face with other Democrats to remind them how important voting is.  DPSC pairs volunteers up to knock on doors.  If you like, you can bring a friend or family member.  It can be accomplished with one person driving and one person knocking and talking with other Democrats, or both people can walk, talk, and cut the work in half.

After a brief tutorial on how to download and use MiniVan, a free downloadable app, volunteer canvassers are given scripts, campaign materials, and a “turf,” or group of houses in a neighborhood to visit.  (You can see a tutorial about downloading and using Minivan here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tv9-HHb1VQA)

Phone banking is the second most effective way to reach voters, and we will have phone banking opportunities available soon.  Phone banking can be done from the comfort of your own home on your own computer.  Stay tuned for more information as we will begin that near the end of August.

We will have post cards to address closer to the election.  As in the past, we will give you a list and some postcards to address and ask you to complete them by a certain date.  Please return them to the office when completed, and we will stamp them and send them out closer to the election.  Postcards will be printed by mid-August, addressed, and sent out in mid to late September.

Our office has a few shifts available.  They are two-hour shifts.  We may call you to help cover someone’s regular shift.  Let us know if that is something you would like to do.  Duties include talking to people who may pop in, helping people with signs and t-shirts, and sometimes addressing post cards.

Donations of cases of water and snacks are always appreciated and welcome.

The Democratic Party of New Mexico is donating money to DPSC if we meet our volunteer goals, so anything you do will have the double benefit of helping to reach voters AND help DPSC raise money.  It is a win-win! Please email either chair@sandovaldemocrats.org or Merrywadsworth29@gmail.com and say that you would like to volunteer.  Let us know how you want to help.

Thank you for all you do for our party and our candidates.

Stay strong and stay blue.
Alexandria Piland, DPSC Chair
