Halftime on the pitch at the NM United Soccer game August 23 featured Feed Rio Rancho Kids as a Power Kick recipient. PNM chooses the nonprofits for participation and provides the funds for each selected local nonprofit. The program is carried out by PNM’s partnership with KOB Channel 4 and NM United. At halftime at each New Mexico United home game, a young fan is selected to attempt three goals that earn a donation for the featured organization.

Feed Rio Rancho Kids was founded in 2019 following the model set by Feed NM Kids in Albuquerque. Each week local Rio Rancho schools receive packets of food for kids to take home for the weekend. About 200 packets are assembled and distributed each month by volunteers. The recipients are selected by social workers at the participating schools. Volunteers have also provided winter coats, Thanksgiving and Christmas food supplies, and backpacks with school supplies.

Partners for the volunteer-funded Feed Rio Rancho Kids are the Democratic Party of Sandoval County and the Unitarian Universalist Westside Congregation. Karen Schafer, co-founder, said, “We are extremely appreciative of the support we receive from PNM. When they designated us as a recipient of the Power Kick program, it resulted in an amazing contribution of $2500.”
