Background Information

Name: Annabella Beck
Town in which you reside: Corrales
Age: 17
Ethnicity: Mostly Italian and German. Also Polish and French.

Occupation: Student. Also Cooking, Hosting & Dishwashing at Village Pizza.

Passions: Volunteering including with Companion Animal Rescue & Medical Assistance (CARMA), an internship with the Corrales Town Council, Key Club at Northwood High School, and an internship with Alex Piland, Chair of the Democratic Party of Sandoval County. Also, Mixed Media Art, especially Jewelry.

Other information you would like to share: I grew up near the San Francisco Bay area and moved to Corrales a few years ago. I plan to go to UNM in the fall to study Biology and Forensics.

Why are you a Democrat?

I think of myself as independent, but my views most closely align with the Democrats. It is very important to me that we protect individuals’ rights within the boundaries of their own bodies. My peers are fired up about abortion rights, which I see more generally as a health care issue. Also important to me are marital rights, i.e., the freedom to marry whom you wish; the protection of workers in our economy; and the importance of making changes in our systems, including economics, transportation, and fishing, for example, to support our planet, which we have been mistreating for some time.

What issue(s) are you most passionate about and why?

That would include LGBTQ+ rights, including rights to health care, gender-affirming care, and therapy, as examples; women’s reproductive rights; the environment; animal rights; and the homeless. With regard to homelessness, I would like to see us spend less money on anti-homeless engineering and more money on providing structures for housing the homeless, and psychological support for the veterans and the mentally ill who are homeless.

What can the Democratic Party of Sandoval County (DPSC) do for you? Provide governance information. I want to be a more educated voter, and I want to see how the party impacts government.

What can you do for the DPSC?

I can offer a younger perspective to the party. Does the party know, for example, that many young people today believe they must choose between work sufficient for their own support and raising a family and keeping a home? Also, I can relay information from the party to other young people.

Anything else you would like to share with the Democrats in Sandoval County?

I may be interested in opening a chapter of Young Democrats.

At this point, resounding cheers from the interviewers ended our conversation. Thank you, Annabella, for sharing your voice and insights with DPSC.
